Background A treatment for mothers-to-be recommended after the third month of pregnancy. The NHS advices pregnant women to inform/consult their doctors or midwives when considering an alternative therapy. It is always safe to have a pre-natal massage once it's known that a pregnancy is following a normal pattern, ideally after the first scan. Some of the benefits of a massage during pregnancy includes relaxation of the body, reduction of body fluid, reduction of anxiety, improvement in mood and sleeping pattern and reduction of back pain. See results of a study conducted by the Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics
Treatment The treatment is conducted on a comfortable massage couch, the client will lie on one side of the body so that the other side can be treated and then will alternate side to treat the opposite part of the body; pillows are placed between the client's legs, under the belly, to give a good support and, under the head so that shoulders don't get crushed during the treatment and the head is kept on a stable and comfortable position.
Techniques The massage techniques used during a pre-natal massage treatment is a combination of Swedish, which is composed of long firm and gentle strokes towards the heart and avoiding pressure on the medial (inside) part of the legs, in case of blood clots. Lymphatic drainage, a gentle stroke along the lymphatic system to improve circulation of the lymphatic fluid, this treatment is done with gentle but firms strokes mainly on the leg area. The back and neck and a wonderful head massage is also performed, this will increase relaxation and will adjust any neck problems.
